North Country Animal League (NCAL) is committed to serving our community by offering a stray hold to animals found as strays in Lamoille County. As an animal shelter with limited space and no full-time veterinary care, we need to be certain that we have the room and resources to accommodate every animal placed in our care.
ID Tags & Microchips
PLEASE REMEMBER, animals can remove collars and ID tags. A microchip is a great option and can make the difference between lost and found for your pet. Please contact your veterinarian for this service, or check for local businesses or organizations that may be offering microchip clinics in your community.
What to do if you find a pet:
- Please check with neighbors before anything. Many times we find that found pets have just wandered away from their home.
- Found Cats: Please call NCAL at 802-888-5065 X 101 during regular open hours or leave a message after hours and someone will call you back to arrange a time for you to bring in the cat to NCAL.
- Found Dogs: Please contact your local ACO or police to notify them. They have microchip scanners and can see if the pet is registered to an owner. If not, they will either contact NCAL to arrange to bring the pet here or they will take the pet to the town’s holding facility.
NCAL Stray Cat Process
Stray cats brought to NCAL will be scanned for a microchip and the owner contacted if a chip is located. If not, NCAL will post the found cat on social media, on the shelter lost and found board and will screen any calls for missing animals. If the cat is not claimed after the 5 day stray hold, NCAL assumes legal ownership of the cat. A behavior assessment will be done and the cat will either be put up for adoption, placed in a foster home or transferred to a partner shelter for adoption if there are no behavior or health concerns that would prevent the cat from being adopted.
NCAL Stray Dog Process
In order for a stray dog to be brought to NCAL, it must come through the local Animal Control Officer (ACO) or the local police department. This is to assure that the dog isn’t reported as missing and to make sure that the local town is notified and aware of the stray dog due to the requirement for dogs to be licensed. Due to the fact that we do not have a full time veterinarian on staff, we are not able to intake any dogs that are aggressive or not able to be handled without first being medicated.
Once the ACO or local police reach out to NCAL, we will coordinate a time to bring the dog in to be held at NCAL for 5 days. NCAL will post the found dog on social media, on the shelter lost and found board and will screen any calls for missing animals. If the dog is not claimed after the 5 day stray hold NCAL assumes legal ownership of the dog. A behavior assessment will be done and the dog will either be put up for adoption, placed in a foster home or transferred to a partner shelter for adoption if there are no behavior or health concerns that would prevent the dog from being adopted.
